The Goal
At MP3D, our mission is to combat the global microplastic crisis by shifting the focus from costly cleanup to proactive prevention. Using affordable 3D imaging and AI, we measure microplastics by volume, shape, and composition—not just particle counts. By providing precise, accessible data, we empower policymakers, researchers, and communities to identify pollution sources, enforce accountability, and implement targeted solutions before ecosystems suffer irreversible damage.
Our Work
Unlike traditional methods that rely on simplistic particle counts, MP3D performs volumetric analysis, capturing microplastics' shape, degradation stage, and even polymer composition with 96.2% accuracy.
Built for real-world impact, our system uses an Arduino-powered microscope and AI to deliver precision at a fraction of the cost of Raman spectroscopy or X-ray tomography. Open-source and field-tested (including in the River Itchen), MP3D is designed for global scalability—particularly in regions where expensive lab equipment is inaccessible. Recognized at top AI/computer vision conferences (ECAI, ECCV), we’re now deploying MP3D in collaborative field studies to stop microplastics at the source.

The Future
Our research has been peer-reviewed and published at top venues, including the prestigious European Conference on Computer Vision and the European Conference on Artificial Intelligence. We plan to continue publishing open-access papers, so that our solution is as accessible as possible.
MP3D empowers regulators and industries to enforce microplastic limits with real-time data. Our $50 sensors replace guesswork with actionable insights, ensuring compliance and cleaner production. We plan to supply data and work with governmental bodies so that our data can be used to inform real policy.
We will work directly with communities to implement our solution. By providing accessible tools and training, we aim to empower local groups to monitor and address microplastic pollution in their own environments. This grassroots approach ensures our technology creates tangible impact where it's needed most.
All data collected through our monitoring systems will be published openly and freely. We believe accessible information is crucial for driving evidence-based solutions, empowering researchers, communities, and policymakers worldwide to take action against microplastic pollution.
